Acrostics

Acrostics

A good way to get started with poetry is the acrostic. Think of a word – the name of someone you love is perfect – and write other words that begin with each letter of the word.

Marvellous
Angelic
Radiant
Intelligent
Amazing

Then move on to writing phrases.

Moody eyes
Amorous voice
Ruby lips
Immaculate face
Awesome voice

And then when you get more confident, try full sentences.

Memories of long walks by the river return.
A long time ago we were together.
Rare were the days we did not meet.
In the spring you told me you were leaving.
Autumn saw you go

And then, if you are really, really daring, sentences that run over and use more than one letter.

Mainly I think you
Are brave and strong,
Really I do.
In the heat of the battle
Always fighting for the poor.

This is a good, gentleĀ  way to start writing poetry. If you are learning an additional language, you can try acrostics too and widen your vocabulary
